A Multitouch App To play Ableton Live "a la Reactable"
Hi all,
so after soooo much work, we just released our Tangiblex Live Set App.
Made with Open FrameWorks and using custom vst, and midi remote script modified from LiveOSC.
Please, visit http://www.tangiblex.net to download the app (mac OSX for the moment). You will be able to play any Ableton Live Set in a multitouch or desktop way, "a la Reactable".
Check this video and photos about it:

No offense here, but you should do a video with "real life examples", i.e. stuff that people would actually listen to.
The video taught me how I could put a delay on a ticktickticktick loop, but not how this platform is viable for making music.

No offense here, but it seems you lack the imagination to envision how this might be able to be used creatively.Komodovaran wrote:No offense here, but you should do a video with "real life examples", i.e. stuff that people would actually listen to.

Hi,
@Komodovaran :: mmmm, yes, the video is to explain HOW the app works, not what it can do..... but anyway, you are right, we are just doing now "real life" videos and we will upload them asap....
To tickle you imagination go to this link to see a concert i made with the old app (much slower than this one) and old setup (less responsive than our new one). It is still not 1% of what can be done, but you will get the point (i hope):

@slesh :: thank you....
best,

Re: A Multitouch App To play Ableton Live "a la Reactable"
nice work... but the latency ...man... the latency is huge.. so what's the point ?
Re: A Multitouch App To play Ableton Live "a la Reactable"
Hi 3dot,
yes, if you are reffering to the video of the concert, i was using my old setup and soft that had latency. The new one is muuuch better, and very "playable".
Also, when you know and practice with some "constant" latency, yourself you anticipate some miliseconds the gesture, and all works ok then. After some days of practice, you almost forget about it....
Anyway, as i said, the new app and setup is completely different than the previous one that you saw on the video, and with much less latency.
Latency does not depend on the App, but on the Multitouch table setup and the computer performance with CCV or Reactivision software. With our new setup, the latency is almost as the one you can see on the Reactable setup.
Check in a few days our new videos about this new app and setup. you will see.
And of course, when you use the LiveSet App in desktop mode, latency is 0.
best,
miguel.

Re: A Multitouch App To play Ableton Live "a la Reactable"
hey Miguel..
very cool setup once it's 100% implemented..
I understand of the multitouch/processing limitations.. add latency..
but the user-experience is vital in such a device...
choppy graphics and felt latency should be out the window.. that is your no.1 goal..
after all this is a tool for real time work not 1 sec. later work..
I know you can "get used to" latency and compensate.. but that's hardly ideal...
looking forward to see this develop..
it could be a dream interface..loading any fx/instrument/part by adding physical objects to the table and playing with them..is ultra-cool !
good luck man!

Hi 3dot,
thank you for the interest and advice.
You are right, those goals are number ones, and i appreciate very much your points.
The software does not have any problem with latency or graphics, all those problems come from the Multi-touch setup. Improving FPS (latency) is as you say the goal...
That is the reason we re-made the app (now in C++) and the setup ....
Very tricky to improve latency, keeping the setup cost to a minimum.... Lot of research, time, money, but we are getting there...
thank you again for the comments.
