May be a silly question but do you need to buy the UAD-2 Solo, Duo or Quad to use UA plug-ins?
What if you are always on the move and you don't want a big dongle plugged into your Mac?
Is there a way of using them directly from the Mac's HD as software only?

Yes because the plugins work on UAD's DSP processors.

unfortunately the same goes for auditioning the plugins - you have to have a dedicated UA hardware processor in order to do it.
