for several hardware fx units?

I have 3 hardware fx units, right now I just use them with a hardware mixer/send&return channels, but I would like to use them inside ableton. Is it better to use them by setting up 3 send/return tracks in ableton or is it better to use them by setting up 3 external fx tracks in ableton?

oh by better I mean better for latency, or otherwise?

3 return track with each an external fx, sending to 3 independent pairs of outs and receiving from 3 pairs of ins

thanks will try this, hoping it turns out to be a better workflow than the hardware mixer route, not that I don't like it cause I do but if there's a better option I'd like to improve. I'm so used to having a hardware mixer in between my hardware instruments and soundcard so the notion to go without it feels kind of awkward but I have 10 ins and 14 outs on my soundcard so I want to try it.
