How to? Means improving skills in generating sounds :)

Post by AlexRusin » Fri Mar 16, 2012 9:51 pm

Hello sound designers.
A young producer need some help. I always wonder how to do more unusual sounds like this: http://youtu.be/q2xYDh-jzBA?t=4m36s . This amazing chillin' out synth. I know how to do usual stuff like saw leads, big pads, driving basses, but I want to improve my skills with more beautiful side of sound design. I'd be grateful if someone can show me some tips(which oscillators, parameters).

Alex

OK well you didn't pick a very hard sound. Three things pop up right away, mostly wet on the reverb, a slowly changing cutoff filter sweep and and a slow attack on both the filter and amplitude. Sounds like a bit of a high resonance setting on the filter as well. Other things that can get you there are a subtle amount of chorus and a sharp EQ setting boost in the high mid range.

hi

i picked up a copy of Welsh's synthesizer cookbook 1 and 2
to learn how synthesizers work (sound design)
its a 2 volume set that explain how they work and how to program them
it is a universal patch book
it shows how to program a sound using harmonics
so i picked up synthedit to learn how to make synths (about $60)
i may pick up synthmaker(free version witch doesn't do much
and one for $150,and one for $300)
i find this rather fun as a filler for breaks during my playing

have fun

not sure about your level of experience but try experimenting in operator. the oscs and most of the envelopes have modulation amounts for velocity. play with envelopes, go overboard on modulation on everything just so you get an idea of what everything is doing. try putting the velocity plugin before the synth or applying a groove to manipulate velocity so the modulation always changes.

another cool thing is experimenting with sidechain's on multiple sources that feed each other, so opening the filter of a single track would manipulate other tracks in the ecosystem. works with compression s well, or both!

Hi Mrobare, have you successfully programmed many of the Welsh synthesizer patches?
