Is there a Beat Repeat equivalent for Midi?

Post by Citizen » Wed Mar 21, 2012 12:56 am

What I mean by this, is is there a midi plug-in that randomises or shuffles the timing of midi notes being played, by 1/32, 1/16, 1/8, 1/4 notes ? (ie. NOT Groove templates)

I guess something that has essentially the same outcome as having a series of clips with Random follow actions, each triggering a different start point of the same clip - effectively making the playhead jump between different parts of the clip, thus creating random phrases.

Is this possible?

OK, but the arpeggiator just forces every note into pre-defined intervals (1/8, 1/16 etc)

Not sure which clip envelope I am supposed to adjust. Can you please eleborate?

If you want to do think for drums check outNerve by Xfer. It's a drum machine with a midi beat repeat style effect which, importantly, has swing templates. it also can output 16 midi notes, one for each pad, and controller data and is generally the fucking bomb. Don't bother looking for a reliable crack these folks deserve your money.

max for live has a device that does it... predictable I know.
nearly midi beat repeat with just live devices...
1) if you build a step sequencer out of a 'round robin' mode random device feeding into a scale device you could create multiple copies of it as a parallel chains in a rack and shift the scale mapping about so that each chain represents the same sequence but with different start points.
2) make these racks selected by different velocity ranges
3) put a velocity device in front of the rack with velocity out set to full randomness.
4) put an arpeggiator in front of the velocity randomiser

play a clip with a single continuous midi note to get the thing rolling.

well it could work.

You can turn off the Sync...

beat repeat reorganises the audio coming out of a synth, it don't do nuffin on the midi data going in.

Yeah Arp is the closest but I haven't gotten it to the taste I'm going for which is repeating kick and snare, say something close to some heavy jungle stuff.
A big main problem is the delayed reaction with the arp in the first place.
Second, the Velocity decay section on the right is lacking in something but I can't articulate it right now until I get it in front of me again.

I think it could be done right for the most part, but need some more time with it.

A combination of Random, Scale, Arpeggiator and Racks will do the trick. Alternativly in combination with Follow Actions.

there are many ways to do it...
use your imagination...
all the building blocks are there..

I meant the 'auto-pattern' of beatRepeat can be mimicked by drawing patterns for 'rate' and 'length' clip envelopes..

you can have a different beat-repeat(=arppegiator) for each note..

i`ve made a maxforlive patch which is modelled after the chaosdesigner from StylusRMX. so you can make beatrepeat style effects and more. it works best with sliced loops (this way you can use the reverse and pitch effect) but u can use it with all midi clips!
There`s a special slicing preset which is included in the download!
you can download it at http://www.skills4live.net/downloads/ChaosDesigner.zip

there`s a short demonstration and explaination on youtube, but its in german:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qza8PEROElo

so if you have m4l try it out!

cheers!
