Cleaning a Roland SH-101

Post by glenn303 » Tue Mar 27, 2012 7:23 pm

I have a SH 101 that needs some cleaning (the plastic casing) what is the best thing to use on it?
Thanks.

The best way is to strip the whole thing down so that the electronics are separate from the two parts of the case. Then give the case a gentle scrub with a soft washing up brush in warm soapy water. Rinse off with clean water and allow to dry. However, that is a long job and not for the inexperienced.

If you want to keep it all together then use a soft cloth dampened down with a bit of warm water with washing up liquid in it. Wipe down with a clean cloth dampened only with water. Keep the amount of dampness on the cloths to the minimum otherwise water will sneak in which may ruin the synth. It's worth removing the slider caps and knobs because a lot of the marks on the case will be around the controls.

Do not use iso-propyl alcohol (IPA) or other alcohol based cleaners - they'll take the grey/red/blue paint off. Yes, the SH-101 is spray painted over the top of coloured plastic.

For really grubby marks that don't come off with water (like gaffer tape residue) you may have some luck with the lemon oil cleaners, eg. Sticky stuff remover by De-solvit in UK.

For cleaning the outer case I use wet wipes, along with a dry lint free cloth.

Works a treat!
