Live 8.3 FTW!

Post by alphadelphi » Mon Apr 02, 2012 7:47 pm

Some good news:
8.3 Release Notes

Improvements and feature changes:

A new "Upload to SoundCloud" option is available in the Export Audio/Video dialog. When enabled, Live will open an upload client after the file has been rendered to disk, so you can upload the rendered file directly to your SoundCloud account.
Added automatic software updating. When enabled, Live will automatically download and install software updates in the background. Users who update to Live 8.3 from an older Live version will see a dialog box when launching Live 8.3 for the first time, where Automatic Updates can be enabled or disabled. You can always change the settings in Live’s "Licenses/Maintenance" Preferences. More detailed information about Automatic Updates is available in our Knowledge Base.
Changed the naming of the Live application. The application is now called "Ableton Live 8" and does not include a specific revision number. The revision number can still be found in the About screen in the Help menu.
The Windows installer has been updated to a newer version.
The default installation path of the Live application has changed on Windows. More information can be found in our Knowledge Base.
Added usage data collection. When enabled, Live will send data about your Live installation and usage to ableton.com. This data will be used to help our developers identify bugs and improve the software. Usage data collection is optional and can be enabled/disabled in the "Licenses/Maintenance" Preferences. More information can be found in our Knowledge Base.
Added control surface support for Akai MPK Mini.

Awesome! The MPK Mini support will be a nice addition and the Soundcloud uploading could be convenient as well.

Anyone else finding the timing unusual? It's like they wanted to buy some more time before releasing Live 9 and these were the easiest to implement in 8 so that they could keep us happy for a bit longer.

They can buy all the time they want. I still hope that we go all the way to 8.5 and get more features (small ones) added along the way.

Nothing wrong with taking their time

I think of it as "wrapping things up", though I'm also very much for a 8.5 release that covers workflow inconsistencies like dragging samples between devices and having all paramters that are multi-selected change (like "Choke"), not too mention Samplers control limits.

biggest thing I miss about DP7 when I'm working with Live. Don't think that'll come in an update though.

One thing, automatic updates has the potential to bite them in the ass. Too many times does an update make somebodies machine somewhere wonky. Seems like the kind of thing added by people with no experience running a big company; something you might expect from Bitwig or Ohm in their 1.0 release that they remove in 1.1, which is simply bizarre in Ableton's case?

i recently bought session drums and when building massive custom libraries from the multimic stuff, the whole idea of multiple choke selection suddenly become one of the most important issues for me heh.

Only if you don't provide an option to turn it off.

^Yeah, that would be my only concern, but the option to turn automatic updates off is there, right? I haven't updated since 8.26
