13" or 15" macbook pro?

Post by ljm600 » Tue Apr 24, 2012 3:17 pm

Im looking at getting a new laptop after my old 15" mac has died, just looking for some feedback from anyone who uses one of the newer 13" pro's for live use and dj'ing, does the smaller screen make much of a difference? and do they have plenty power for running a good number of tracks in ableton?

I like the 13" for portability. At home I plug it into a larger external monitor.

Yeah there is no point in the larger screen sizes: the whole point of a laptop is for portability. Amazing external monitors are cheap so just use that at home.

I'll also raise my glass to 13.
That extra two inches is pretty important when I'm playing out.

I, too, rock a large monitor at home. Think about it, the $150+ difference between the 13 and 15 can afford you a 21" widescreen from Newegg, easily. Shit's so cheap these days- I love the future.

I'll second the votes for a 13". I just love the portability.

well....

the main difference between them is quadcore i7 vs dualcore i7. pretty big difference. if you have the money to spend, go with the 15", imho of course.

new macbook pros should come out in near future. I would wait, because there is rumors that the new line would have 13" quad core model. Of course there is also rumors that the new line won't have optical drives which I don't like.

If you use a lot of VST plugins then I would not recommend anything else than a quad core and currently there is not a 13" quad so it would have to be 15" then. If you use just samples in Live then I suppose you would very well manage even with a dual core.

15.

i work on this thing every day, everywhere. those 2 inches make a difference that portability doesnt make up for. (think about having the bonus space for the live browser window if you want it).

Another vote for 15, if I wanted smaller size over power I'd get an Air and learn to live with the limitations :)

friend got a 13" for live performance, was running 8 tracks @ 44.1/24 got some glitches and audio loss... I suggested him to remove optical drive with an ssd, no more glitches. I suggest you do this or get the 15" with 7200 RPM drive
