Thin sound!

Post by jpga » Tue May 08, 2012 11:58 pm

Why does it feels like Ableton Live's audio engine is spinning at half speed?
I do not need any dodgy answer just a simple explanation why it feels soo thin.
There is nothing wrong with my speakers, sound card, or sound.
Give me a tip on how to clear me out of the crisis.

Logic.
Ableton is great to create in but when the screen is filled with sound blocks, it lose it all and feels cheap.
Is the best way to separate drum group, base group, synths and stuff on their own outputs to the console?

You're getting sarcasm because you're asking for the solution to a problem most people here don't believe exists.
Add to the fact you have no reference for anyone to go by, just two names, Live and Logic.

This is something you should be demonstrating.
Show the forum the comparable thinness.

Give us two renders of the same project - one done in Logic and one done in Live using the same fx in both. Then we can have a discussion. Otherwise, this topic is a waste of time.

thousands and thousands of Live users, millions of people picking a DAW to work with over the last decade or so and the OP finally cracked it!! we've ALL been mislead, Live sounds awful and NOBODY noticed!!

jpga - you yourself aren't speaking to the topic at a the level you're asking for in the response.

Again, remind us what style of music youre making???

I dont know what u mean by spinning at half speed, but yes, i will agree, Live doesnt have the depth that a mixdown in Logic does.

Sebastien Leger will create in Live, then render All Tracks and mix in Logic.
Personnally, i think ProTools has the clearest sound. But its all splitting hairs.

Trentmoller made his early stuff in Acid Pro. Now thats shit sound for you.

but if your making progressive house, depth is probably very important.

Cheap solution:
Waves NLS or
Slate VCC

And find your desired "clean" console choice. I havent used these yet but the forums say theyre great.

Or logic.

Expensive solution:
Dangerous Mixbus
SPL mixdream
SSL X-Desk
Neve 8816

I have the NEve, and love it. Ill bring out the drums and a stereo pair (sometimes kick and drums separate) Bass, Backing, vocals and reverb/delays also as stereo pair and it brings that depth back.

Also, if i want more colour (retro-ness) ill sub mix all tracks through the neve, then back into Live as stems. i,e. kick snare hats toms claps will each go throuh its own channel on the neve, then back into Live as a stereo track. then same for all the synths, guitars etc in the backing. Vocals i usually still mix in Live. It takes longer, and you occasionally fuck up a level here and there which you have to go back and re-mix, re-record in, but the result it what im lookng for.

If you are after a clean, deep, modern sound, the Dangerous stuff is the way to go.

But remember, good converters are key if your mixing out of the box. Apogee, Lynx, Prism etc it where you should aim.

And of course, its only the icing on the cake. Make sure ur tracks are dope before laying down any cashola

+1

Did the trick for me. My mixes before were slender in the extreme but they're pretty obese now.
