APC40 not working on MBP

I have a new macbook pro 15" and am using it with the most recent Ableton Live with an APC40. For some reason the APC is only working intermittently. Or rather, Live stops recognizing it during production. What gives? Is there any advice on how to resolve this? For example, I will the bank select buttons to move up and down and that will just top even though the red outline is still visible in live and the apc40 is still lit up.

Dodgy USB cable? Tried it in different USB ports?

There's no particular reason it shouldn't just work that I know of unless something's faulty. I got mine out the box, plugged it in, and it's just worked since!

perhaps I'll more thoroughly test my ports. However I am using a new Macbook Pro. Hopefully it's not a dodgy port. Kinda sucks.
