Are "breakdowns" 100% necessary in Electronic Music?

Post by enomusic » Mon May 14, 2012 6:16 pm

I'm working on a Remix for a contest and its a deep/tech/house track... It does not have a breakdown and I don't feel it needs one but I'm wandering for the purpose of the contest if the judges might require it to have one? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Do what you think is right.

Songs don't need breakdowns.

Some have them, some don't.

GREAT question. I put breakdowns in most of my tracks... but I wonder if that's for lack of creativity regarding the dynamic evolution of the song. It can definitely be overdone... and I've definitely overdone it in the past. I look forward to hearing more opinions on this one.

no.
i'm using them less and less. there are styles that doesnt "eat" breakdowns like dub techno and deep house also taking them gingerly.

"Excrement! That's what I think of Mr. J. Evans Pritchard! We're not laying pipe! We're talking about poetry. How can you describe poetry like American Bandstand? 'I like Byron, I give him a 42 but I can't dance to it!' "

if you want to get all smartsy..
time is obviously necessary.. so are sounds..
structure looseness can be debated.. but there is usually one of those too...

YES.. Debate!!
First of all, time is something we cant turn off.. So thats sort of a given ingredient if you live in this universe.

Sounds are a little trickier.. This really comes down to what music actually is, which I dont think anyone really can age on. That being said, what music is, is really up to what the listener is perceiving as music. Can a person dance to silence equally joyful as to music? Can a person born without hearing feel the beat on a concert and dance to it?

Structure.. I can say without a doubt that I have many times experienced the sounds of a forest filled with life equally joyful as the music I listen to when I get home..

Does music have rules, or are whatever rules the choice of the listener?

I always thought music = arrangement of sounds on some time-scale... (by a human)
but yeah... I guess being perceived by a human is what makes it count..
natures' "music" will always be more complex than whatever a human being can comprehend..
surely you'd need some kind of consciousness though right ?
