Hey all, New here. On the trial and really loving Live. I have absolutely no musical ability but am learning this music production thing at a steady pace thanks to billions of tutorials I have been given or on YouTube. And music theory is being slowly digested too. Lot to take on board.

Question, as subject really. I think I'd benefit in the creation process with a proper melody and I came up with one last night in my head. Probably awful but there you go. What I'd like to know is if there is a good way of humming/whistling/farting a tune and for it to be converted into MIDI accurately. Something in ableton would be great of course but I don't mind an external app. Anything you guys can recommend?

This is a very complicated computing process.
Anyway, have a look to Melodyne.

If you have an IOS device there's an app called Vocal Beater which kind of does that.
It's more meant for 'percussive' sounds, but it has a built in learning mode which you can learn to recognize different sounds and assign them to certain MIDI notes with the end result being a velocity sensitive midi file which you can transfer to your computer.
As I said it's more for percussive sounds like done with beatboxing, but you could it a try.

Thanks for prompt replies. I figured it may have something to do with auto-tune etc. I find it quite hard to convert a ditty into keys on my mpk mini. Tone deaf I guess. I'm comfortable enough with beats, I just struggle with the melody input. Guess I was hoping there was an app that would take a wav, insert MIDI 'guesses' and then I could fiddle with the editor and get as close as I can.

I don't posess an ios device right now, on Android. But I can have a look on the market.

I keep meaning to try the widisoft vst to use with guitar, but not got round to it yet. Worth a look at demo I guess.

The chunks missing out of my shin would say you onto something. It's for my other passion, big bike down big hills.

I suppose I should say I'm into anything on the Brainfeeder label. It's a highly organic sound and therefore I guess sampling will be a large part of my potential output. Therefore accuracy and midis don't really need to be tooooo accurate.

Melodyne has made me a very happy bunny indeed! Christ almighty. I recorded the ditty on my phone at work (loud engineering firm) and has emulated it almost perfectly. Nothing that a tiny tweak in the editor wont fix. Thank you!

good on monophonic stuff... simple chords will work also.. but really it just depends on how good and clear the original material is.. like if the instrument is solo'd , then you have a better chance of getting the correct midi.. if your trying to lift the midi from audio with kicks, snares, etc in the back ground, you'll have less success..

Not exactly Live-orientated but I was thinking of this when Studio One got the guts of Melodyne built in.

Record into Soundcloud application from phone > upload to Studio One > open in (S1) Melodyne > Drag track to Midi Instrument Track.

Haven't gotten around to trying it yet (mainly due to my old iPhone needing a good kicking!)

music is hard.

Windows media player can actually covert a lot of music formats, and I believe MIDI is a format that they can covert to several formats.
