Ableton Forum

Hi Everyone,

To make a long story short, about a year ago I bought Reason 5 and an Akai MPK49.
The MPK49 came with a demo copy of Ableton.
I dismissed the program because it didn't look like "real" instruments like Reason.
Well about a week ago I decided to give Ableton another try.
Wow I didn't realize how tightly integrated Live was with Akai.
The keyboard is response as well as the drum pads on top.
And the sounds in Ableton are really good.
There is something about the workflow that is really conducive to creating.
Also I am able to use my Maschine as a VST or midi controller.
And even drop the patterns I have created in Maschine to Live.
This is a BEAST of a program!!(Thats a GOOD thing )
I have a full suite copy on order. I can't wait.
I have been watching a LOT of youtube videos.
They are very helpful. But people seem to gloss over certain steps or
take for granted that you know the program.
I know hat live has videos built in as well as Abletons website has them also.

Can you all recommend books, DVD's or websites that may help me get a good grasp on this program?

I guess the only other question is can I get Ableton Live to do my laundry and make my toast in the morning.
I'll get back to you once I figure that out.

MacPro videos,are excellent, there is a good in depth selection about Ableton Live 8 and many others
I have only started like yourself using Ableton,I use it with Reason 6 as a rewire project and also on its own,when I need a certain sound,to record into Reason my audio interface
And many other things too

I've probably learnt more from his tutorials than any other single source!

Book: Ableton Live 8 Power, byt Jon Marguilies. It's super good.

Also, someone already mentioned the MacProVideo courses. I've only watched the Core Live 8 videos, but I was already pretty proficient in Live by then and I still picked up a bunch of tips.

You don't need basic course except free tutorials. Actually, manual covers all of it.

Different people learn different ways. I read manuals when I need to look something up but I learn by doing. With videos I can work along with the tutorial. Great thing about Live is there are all kinds of resources (books, documentation, tutorial lessions, videos) everywhere, and people can choose to learn in the manner that suits them best.

But yeah, that Dubspot course is probably worth checking out, as it's currently free. Haven't looked at it myself though.

All people learn how the software works before using it. It is fully described in the manual, youtube and that free video tutorial. If you are so lazy that someone should teach basic from A to Z which are all described in them, you couldn't keep learning. Applications are less described and less explained.

Did you ever learn anything by listening, UltimateOutsider? Or even reading?

They've fallen out of fashion in education in recent years, what with 75% of the Western World suddenly being somewhere on the autistic spectrum.

Which is a shame as I still reckon they could be quite good as a learning tools alongside the doing.

As a fairly new user of Ableton Live ,I bought some of the MacPro videos,and been back and forth learning new stuff bit by bit
Currently using Reason,with Ableton Live in rewire mode,in some of my projects,and using Ableton purely in others.
