i know ableton is multi core but is it multi cpu ?
the new machine im looking at has two quad core cpu's, i need to know that ableton can use that before i buy a machine that could be complete overkill.

Did you read that thread? He said 12core. It's multi CPU.natural pulse wrote:pencilrocket wrote:viewtopic.php?f=1&t=172654

From a software perspective, there is no difference between a 'core' and a CPU 'chip'. The usual approach is to let the OS deal with allocating threads to cores/CPUs.
Overkill? Not if you want to use lots of devices and tracks with low latency.
Re: multi cpu machine
Live most definitely supports multiple cores. Keep in mind that the limitation is how much processing you have on each track - since Live doesn't split up the processing on one track to multiple cores.
Try this:
With one track in the Set, put a CPU intensive plug-in on it - look at CPU meter. Duplicate the plug-in, and you should see the CPU double. If you instead duplicate the track, so there is only one plug on each track, the CPU meter should read the same % as with one track, since each track is using a different core.
There is an old thread about all of this somewhere, possibly in one of the old beta forums.
Cheers,
Brian
