I can only say something about the previous MacBook Air model (mid-2011). I had the basic 13" configuration (core i5 1,7 Ghz, 4 GB Ram, 128 GB SSD) and it had no trouble running ableton. Ofcourse, this is only a dualcore processor, so when you're using cpu-intensive plugins, don't expect monster performance. Since I didn't use to much plugins at the time I bought it, I didn't bother about it. But now I'm doing some mastering as well, so I use plugins on my master channel (linear phase EQ etc). I switched to a 17" MacBook Pro now (i7 quad core, 16gb ram and ssd) and the difference is ofcourse noticable. It just depends on what you want to do with it... Always buy something that fits your needs :-)
