Need more volume/power
Need more volume/power
HI
Right now my system uses x2 Yamaha 50 hs monitor speakers, about 70 watts

I need something more powerful, perhaps double.
My neighbors in the practice building are loud!
Any recommendations pls?

Your best bet would be to stay away from 'powered speakers' They are always underpowered.
Get passive speakers and a separate power amp. It will rock your socks off.

Tell that to my 5,000 watt RCF PA system - after it's knocked you over backwards.knotkranky wrote:Your best bet would be to stay away from 'powered speakers' They are always underpowered.

Change rooms? Change hours? Headphones?
If they are really that loud... how do you think you are gonna work with just putting louder monitors in your room? (serious question)

Re: Need more volume/power
Nothing useful to add, but make the bastards pay for disturbing your sessions. Get the loudest you can afford. Screw sound quality.

Actually, Heaven's answer is better.

event opals.. plenty power here.. but remember, not so good to mix at loud levels.. my mixes turn out better when i mix at lower levels.. plus it saves my hearing..

Re: Need more volume/power
Sure, but when you need it loud, it needs to not fold up like it often does in internal power'd speaks. They do have limited headroom in comparison. If you're use to powered speakers, find ya some 8" 2-ways and a 250w a side amp and turn it up. It's a monster w a sub.

Don't damage your own hearing...
Instead, mount PA horns on top of your house, aimed at theirs. Maybe an hour before you decide to go to sleep, broadcast something.

Re: Need more volume/power
while the hs50's certainly are not the loudest powered speaker around, the bottom line is that speakers designed for mixing simply aren't made to provide PA level volume. nor is such volume desirably for mixing, as mentioned previously. accurate mixing and masking loud environmental sounds are kind of mutually exclusive goals.
if you want to "compete" with the neighbors, then get a PA setup as 102455 suggested. be prepared for a steep learning curve on getting your mixes to translate though. pa's get loud, but unless you're dropping some serious coin they're not very accurate, especially in the low end.
conversely most speakers designed for mixing just aren't that loud, again unless you're spending big cash. one possible exception might be the KRK RP10-3's - basically midfields for under $1k/pair. not sure you'll be able to find a better accuracy/volume balance for the money unless you start getting into used passive monitors+power amps.
honestly either mixing when the neighbors aren't playing or finding a different place to mix are probably the simplest and most effective solutions. sound treatment might help, but treatment capable of significant volume reduction is not simple or inexpensive by any stretch.
