Any vst synths out there similar to operator?

Post by celeriak » Fri Jul 06, 2012 1:23 pm

So I love using operator for its simple ui and huge potential for sound creation. Was just wondering if there were other synths out there with maybe a similar layout or workflow but with a different sound "engine" (if you get me...)

Not the same kind of layout, but Synplant does have a simple interface that can lead to a huge range sound.

FM8 is like Operator on steroids..
though..the GUI is a matter of taste...they both have multi-pages..
there are also some neat ones in Reaktor..

crystal is awsome (with a horrific GUI)
on that note let me just add that Absynth does some FM..quite easily..
although limited to 1 operator per oscillator..

but I don't really know if the FM/DX7 can be surpassed for pure FM synthesis..
I think only modular software that allows FM (like Reaktor/Max) can theoretically go beyond..

operator is a 4 operator FM synth as named by yamaha
so if you are looking for something similar
you have to look for a synth with 4 osc, a filter and even additive synthesis (64 partial) !
if you want pure fm for free double six and oxe fm synth are perfect
phantom from discodsp will let you import preset form Yamaha DX100/DX27/DX21 !

I did it a long time ago and dont remember where I got the files but FM8 can actually read the "midi dumps" or some such file exported from the original DX7. There are factory collections as well as user and even experimental original DX7 patches.
It wont be hard to track down, I dont think, if someone felt like digging.
My impression of them after trying them (although I didnt have the hardware next to me) was that the patches sounded identical but FM8 obviously has advantages such as morphing, the sequencer, effects, and so on.
I havent really explored FM8 as much as I would like to, but if I were going to do a heavy FM piece and had a choice between a mint DX and FM8 for a production I would still probably choose the latter. There are no disadvantages that I could see but only advantages.

Fwiw.

Edit:
Kind of cross posted with Carrieres about the patch importing, but on FM8

FM8 :
by far the most vast flexible 'routing matrix' for 6 oscillators/operators...
vast modulation scheme ..including an sidechain audio envelope follower..
import DX7/DX7II and DX200 presets.. (available on web btw)
cool built in arpeggiator..
MORPHING !
an Easy panel for controlling globally..
an fx rack...
that can be used as an audio fx vst as well...
seriously there's really no competition..

there's no additive engine for the operators..Like in Operator..
but to be honest... you don't really need it..
operator isn't an additive synth at all!
as the partials cannot be controlled by the user in realtime.. or even modulated /automated...
(that is..without building a huge rack with 16 instances of operator playing together.. 1 oscillator for each partial..)
