Picked up a DX7 at an estate sale. The gentleman was the touring guitarist/keyboardist for The Doobie Brothers & The Moody Blues. He had quite the gear collection. Anyway, I'd like to say the DX7 can't be replaced, but I use FM8 & Operator instead, mainly Operator. FM8 has one feature I really like, envelope slopes, which is an advantage Sampler has over Simpler also. If you're looking to go beyond Operator, FM8 would probably be the most obvious option. Both fantastic synths IMO. Operator is so great for drum sounds inside drum racks.

If you use Reaktor then check out salamander anagrams work here...

Specifically the "Modulator" Synth.

http://salamanderanagram.wordpress.com/ ... or-update/

it started as an operator clone and then he took it several steps beyond what operator can do.

the layout and organization of modulator is very different but I actually like it a lot more than operator.

it has 4 oscillators with ring mod, FM and phase mod options plus selectable osc routing, its awesome.

slightly larger GUI than Operator. You can load custom waveforms using samples (sfz) or additive generator.

Thanks for all the input people. Lots of love for fm8 . First one to check out. I've always wanted to get into reaktor But I know I'll need more time to learn it. Some of these synths look really nice.
