e.g., TwistedWave can open .avi files as sound files.

If it's on a Mac with Lion and depending on the format I'm sure you can right click the movie file choose services and re-encode just as audio. You'll get the full 1.5hrs or whatever doing it that way, but should work! (Can't rememeber the exact thing as I haven't got my Mac here at the mo, but you should be able to work it out if you do).
