Why would you ever want 'Vol < Vel' value to be not 100%?

I don't quite understand the purpose of this function in Simpler/Sampler/Impulse.

Why would you not want the variations in velocity of your midi notes to not represent a 1:1 correlation with the volume? :?:

This would always drive me nuts, when I would wonder why I couldn't hear the variation of the velocity of my midi notes - only to find 'Velocity' or 'Vol<Vel' set to 0%.

Can anyone clear this up for me?

when you trigger samples via simpler, one-shots like spoken words, sound efx etc and you want them to play back at a given volume that you have set with the fader, and that doesn't get influenced by the velocity of your finger hitting the key or the pad.

When you play a sound live (from a keyboard), there's often too much dynamic range if you have vel>vol set to 100%. That is, the softest notes are too soft in relation to the loudest. Think of vel>vol as a kind of compressor that is triggered by velocity.

Might depend on your keyboard playing style as well, if you're playing stuff in using a keyboard. Or if you're drawing in notes you might want the velocity adjustments to be more subtle. I generally find 100% to be too sensitive in both these situations.

I like to draw my velocity in. it allows more control

when layering sounds you can set different values so that a particular layer - eg a percusive attack sound - gets more prominant as you play harder.

Also on basses its good to turn it to 0 so that you can tie other parameters to the velocity.

when you want velocity to have SOME effect not a total effect...
in short.. almost always..
my default is 60%..
