Audio effects on MIDI track?

Post by dilshan89 » Sun Aug 05, 2012 10:22 am

Hi guys,

I've got Ableton hooked up to my Roland Fantom G keyboard. But when I record a MIDI track, and try and drag an audio effect on to it, nothing happens. I guess this makes sense, but I'm sure I've seen Audio effects placed on MIDI tracks before. Could I be doing something wrong?

You can drag audio effects onto Midi tracks.
Yes, you can, but it won't do you no good unless there's an Ableton-/Partner-/vst-Instrument placed before it.
where it says 'drop audio affects here'!
After placing an audio effect the space before it should read 'drop instrument here', shouldn't it?

- And note the changes in the output section of the midi track before and after dropping either. So: No Instrument, no audio.

Thanks the External Instrument worked great! Although now I have a new problem. So I've got my Roland Fantom hooked up, and my Fantom VST open on Ableton. I've opened two new MIDI tracks and placed 'External Instruments' on both of them, so now I can place Audio effects on these MIDI tracks (which I couldn't do before). However, now when I place an effect into one of the MIDI tracks, the effect is applied onto the clips in both MIDI tracks. How can I stop this from happening? In summary, both MIDI tracks have External Instruments on them, but the Audio effects placed into one MIDI track effect both MIDI tracks.

Thanks for all the help so far

Both MIDI tracks are connected to instruments on the Fantom, via the Fantom VST.
