Split midi chord so each note plays different chain/sample?
Split midi chord so each note plays different chain/sample?
Let's say you have an instrument rack containing 3 chains... each chain contains an instrument (analog, operator, sampler, whatever). I'd like to be able to play a 3 note chord and have the first note play the 1st chain, 2nd note play the 2nd chain, 3rd note play the 3rd chain... to create big lush pad sounds. Is there anyway in Live to accomplish this type of midi chord note splitting?
Re: Split midi chord so each note plays different chain/sample?
Is this a trick question?
Re: Split midi chord so each note plays different chain/sample?
probably with M4L...
I would really like to do this too, though I have no idea as well.
it's kind off challenging, because when you play a chord, each note starts at slightly different time
maybe a buffer could gather these notes until a certain number are pressed, then spit them out in note order low to high to 3 different chains... just thinking here.

section 17.5.4 in the manual.
in a midi effect rack hit the 'Key' button, assign accordingly.

It can be done in M4L. See these threads for related discussions/solutions.

this is something i've wanted for ages, but from the point of view building a polysynth from multiple mono synths.
IMO it could be done as an extension of the chain selector mechanism.

When they are on the piano roll it could be done by changing channel for each notes, if supported by daw. But when it is played live and the daw is supposed to identify the notes in real time, I think it will give odd result as you can't hit all notes at the exact same time.

one way to get something similar without M4L is to use the 'Vel' range editor, but you do lose your velocity sensitivity...
- drop all your synths in the instrument rack. make sure they don't respond to velocity.
- hit 'Vel' and then 'distribute ranges equally'.
- drop a Velocity device in front of the instrument rack and set it up like this:

3 notes + 3 chains
Do the chord job manualy
men seriously, the best and simple way to achieve this is to unrack the instruments and put each one on a respective midi track.
If you got fx on the rack, keep it by duplicating on other midi tracks and delete unecessary instruments
What is so difficult having 3midi tracks with 3instruments?
It would surely ease the thing for such a simple task

Re: Split midi chord so each note plays different chain/sample?
OP wants to play the chord, not draw a single note in 3 clip over 3 tracks.
Re: Split midi chord so each note plays different chain/sample?
The only way that I was able to imagine was "one note" chords. Where you hit one note, which in return makes a chord. Of course that is not as flexible. All you'd do in that case is rack up with a Pitch midi device before each instrument. Probably macro each of those with unique knobs. And likely throw the Scale device on after Pitch. Macro all instances of that to same knobs.
That would settle some basic major-minor triads. If you wanted to get more goofy, you could assign the macros to buttons or keys instead of knobs. Then you could hold certain types of chord as you tap on root notes or whatever.
You can get really goofy by using Arpeggiators and arpeggiating 'blank' low velocity notes with normal velocity ones to give the impression of a strum or whatever, but I'm thinking it sounds messy just imagining putting that together haha. And probably not worth it.
Still, top part could be a fun way to perform a song haha

Re: Split midi chord so each note plays different chain/sample?
you can accomplish this quite easily by rewiring reason into ableton. a combinator can layer an infinite number of synths in no time at all. but i take it you wouldn't be asking this question if you were trying to do this via reason.
