Could be the following:
1) you had another application using your audio drivers when you launched live
2) your soundcard was not turned on or your computer thought it was disconnected (sometimes the case with usb or firewire devices)
3) Live is losing its preferences for some reason..
if it's 1) or 2), if Live launches and it cannot access or find your soundcard, it will disable the audio engine and you have to go back and set the preferences or if you shut down, you will have to set your preferences next time you load live.

Re: why does the audio engine ocassionally disbale itself?
Can't help I'm on XpPro SP1 and it's never happened from Live 3.0 to 4.1.1 so I'm not of much help - never does it if I change sample rates or drivers for Audition 1.5 either ...................... sorry .Sebastian wrote:......so I go back and reset it ipreferences....but why do you think this happens?

Much like Reason 3.0 .
It runs like a fuggin' champ / no glitches / CPU issues or anything either .
In fact I'd say it's totally bug free bar the pc keyboard command mapping issues the Prop's are aware if it's mega stable .
I seem to be lucky or something.
My aren't the wings of butterflies beautiful and do they not make wonderful perturbations.....

Try something like this:
1) make sure live works the way you want it
2) make a copy of the preferences file (not sure of the name off top of my head)
3) use live without changing the preferences until you get the same problem
4) dont fix the problem in live
5) see if the last modified time/date stamp has changed on the preferences file
6) copy your old preferences over on top of the messed up preferences file
if that seems to make your sound card work again and you cannot figure out why the preferences get messed up (if that is indeed whats happening) you can:
1) make a "batch" file which will copy the backup preferences file you have over on top of whatever live has
2) then the batch file launches live
3) you double click the batchfile and it will fix your preferences and launch live for you instead of normal shortcut to live

thanks guys! I did double check on Adam Jays suggestion about the hidden files in Folder Options, was set as he suggested
Regarding the preferences file...did a search of preferences.cfg.....nothing came up! Could this be an indication of the problem?
Also, Im not sure if I understand, this info is in the manual? Yes I do have a hard copy of it
again thanks a bunch
whatever else you can think of, I appreciate
