MS Surface Pro Tablet Support?

Post by slicedbread » Tue Aug 14, 2012 5:57 pm

Howdy,

The sneak peek at the Surface tablet got me very optimistic about using it with Ableton Live. Granted the RT version will not be compatible, but the Pro version coming a few months after the October Surface release should be compatible with all legacy x86 applications. I'm wondering if anyone from Ableton can comment on whether any testing has been done to incorporate multi-touch into session view. I'd imagine that legacy applications would default to a single-mouse-click behavior if the RT-style touch interface was not used by the application, but getting multi-touch for edits and launching clips would be pretty rad.

What would you say if I told you that several software companies are actively developing against Windows 8 right now and will have RT apps available for download on day one? 8O

I'd venture to guess that most, if not all, software companies who target Windows have already at least downloaded the Preview Build.

Well I’m willing to bet those companies are a lot bigger (or boutique) than Ableton and/or don’t have a major desktop application that is long overdue.

Hey this thread is quite old, but I've had a Surface Pro for a few months now. In that time I've pretty much concluded that Live 9 is not suited to touchscreen use - key UI elements are simply too small, and in some cases - e.g. fader controls - unnecessarily so. Moreover I don't see any evidence that Ableton has tried to improve the UI for touchscreen suitability in Live 8, so I've started to consider going to another DAW as opposed to upgrading. Maybe just sit one rev out and see what the future brings.

Has anyone else tried to do anything with Ableton and the Surface Pro, or a touchscreen-equipped ultrabook? I'd love to hear about any successes you've had. Thanks!

I've got a touchscreen laptop and Live is pointless with touch as its only one point input. Traktor with a single input is fun for bad scratching.

The only audio programs that I've seen which support multitouch are Sonar, Reaper and Usine. I'm tempted to try the free version of Usine but haven't got around to it.

It seems that software developers need to do something to support multi-touch.

hehe back from the dead... no doubt the default ui in ableton wouldn't work well for everything on a surface, but there are really cool apps for ipad that offer remote control for doing a subset of performance related stuff with touch. obviously, clip launching, maybe some big knobby knobs for a few key parameter tweaks. it would be really cool to have something like that right on the same device that the sound engine is running on instead of remotely controlling another pc. i bet a clever programmer could do a ui builder and midi mapper through something like midiyoke to drive ableton in the background.
