well, a higher quality than that then

my point was how would mixing fair on higher end headphones, logically you'd still need to test it on a range of sources but it's obviously going to be different than cheap ear buds.

LMAO $300 for headphones that are bassier than skrillex's projects. Yeah right. I'd rather let Dr. DRE come down here and kiss my ass. No Homo.
Anyone know any clubs you can get into when you're 15?

Yes thats why you mix on headphones that have very flat frequencies. Beats by Dre are all Bass and Low Mids. Horrible for Mixing.

Skrillex is all midrange and no bass though? Dance music for ipods, not clubs.

industry standard monitors was for years ns10m despite them (allegedly) sounding rubbish - I have these.

I also have some akg studio headphones.

Getting the balance absolutely right across a number of listening systems (clubs - very loud and bassy but often mono, home use (hi-fi), headphones (could be your biggest market)) is clearly a challenge.

I might be tempted to aim for the headphone market first - this is where your inital fanbase is likely to come from.

What's the proportion of music that's listened to in terms of total hours of music?

headphones ~= 75%
hi-fi/speakers ~= 20%
clubs/other ~= 5%

just guessing

The thing is you can't mix regularly on headphones for an extended time. You'll first experience ear fatigue then later hearing loss.

yep...
more than 20 mins. straight with no break...at normal volumes...
will send you on the fast train to tinnitus town
keep your volume low...
working with headphones is un-healthy

that said... ear damage in this day and age is almost inevitable...

sounds totally wrong to me... in any case it doesn't matter..
headphones should be the least imo...
speakers the most... but speakers break to different kinds sizes etc.
there's always trade-offs when mastering for a large range of systems..
better let someone with knowledge and means mix/master your tracks
if you want them to sound just as good as other professionally mastered tracks out there

Pretty much everything I've produced or remixed in the last 4 years has been mixed down on a pair of DT990 Pro headphones. Best cans I've ever used :D
TTKK / NOODLES / iANDALE! / TIGERBEAT6 / HOT & HEAVY etc

but my point is that if you are trying to get your music listened to then you will be putting it on soundcloud or something first.

people listen to this on headphones - what's the point in making your home mixes for Glastonbury when they will never get there because the people who are going to make you a star listen to it on headphones on the tube or bus or at their desks on crap headphones?

like I say - just a guess and in the end it's up to the op to decide what their target audience is.

great stuff man !!! I like !
one thing though...
could be a preference ..but on my speakers (Event 20/20) the sub-bass on (all) your tracks ...sound a bit loose/muddy and uncontrolled...as if it's delayed behind the track...
when I listen on my headphones (ATH-M50) the bass sounds tight..
just sayin'....
great stuff btw ! :D

why do you assume people listen to soundcloud on headphones ?
people with a passion for music tend to keep a stereo system(s) near by.. and decent (listening) headphones..
they are the ones that you need to reach...they will make you a "star"

Pretty much the reason why I'm saving for a pair of Adam A7's at the moment

I've been holding out on getting decent monitors until I have a decent space that I can treat acoustically and it looks like that is on the cards finally ;) In the meantime though, DT990s and muddy bass ftw

oh yeah... Adams... yummy
I see your philosophy...but don't forget to take care of your ears dude... (as much as you can)
in the meantime... you can carry a notebook around .. listen to your tracks on different systems and take notes...
then apply them to the master...

I know I never listen to music on hi-fi any more:-(

Headphones on the tube, at my desk.

Occasionally on my iPhone in the car or tablet in the garden.

Only ever use speakers when I make my own music.

Interesting question though - what proportion of music is listened to on headphones?
