Are new monitors worth it?

Post by garyd7 » Sat Sep 01, 2012 6:34 pm

Would it really be worth it upgrading my monitors from Edirol/Cakewalk MA-7As (discontinued)?

I would be primarily be looking at either the Yamaha HS-50
http://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/recording ... 2419245113
or KrK Rokit RP5
http://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/recording ... 0112505613

My room is quite dry although there does seem to be a bit of a bass build up from 100-180Hz although I've been able to compensate for this in mixing. Would the extended frequency response be a problem in such an untreated room as just now my monitors struggle below 90Hz?

Has anyone ever heard these monitors to compare? I'm edging towards the Yamahas since they're a bit cheaper and look better IMO.

Thanks

I got some HS-50’s about 6 months ago. I was looking at the same choices. I am sure they will be worth it once I relearn how I am listening to things. For me personally, the change has been so dramatic over what I was doing before that I am still trying to make sense of it all.

I recommend good headphones such as the beyer dt770s. Then save a decent amount of $$$ for great monitors. Prsonally I find the Pelonis Model 4288s to be incredible for electronica/bass music/downtempo/dubstep etc because of their extended real bass response to 24hz. When you are dealing with actual notes in those frequencies it's good to hear more than just thump. The mids are super detailed too. Otherwise, the dt770s will give you a huge improvement and the monitors listed would be a good way to check your mixes on speakers.

Dislaimer: the beyer dt770 250ohm headphones are my preference due to their robust and smooth frequency response, but you will have to find what works with me
