How much limiter is too much?

How much higher can you go than 0 on the master when using a limiter on the master? In other words, when will the mix start to sound bad when you pushing the limiter's levels?

In the hands of a newbie, one limiter is already too much :P

(and I admit I was once that newbie)

Agree with the previous answers and to add, once you hear it sounding bad, you are already waaaay too far. Also, to test and hear how it really affects your sound, you have to set things up in a way that when you increase the limiting on your master channel your master volume levels that you hear do not go up at the same time. Any change in perceived volume will change your perception of what is going on.

As mentioned already, there's no hard and fast rule to how much is too much. Different songs will let you limit more or less before it starts to be audibly noticeable.

You need to a/b with and without the limiter.
Turn the volume of the limited track down until it is a similar volume to the raw track. Then you will be able to compare the two properly.

I use an fx group with the limiter on one chain and the dry signal on another, then solo each chain to a/b compare

If you don't match the levels we humans tend to think of the louder one as being better
