Abelton is a very expensive product compared to its competitors. Despite it having some uniqueness compared to other DAWs, most of the DAWs out there are under $400. Some work very hard at keeping you attached to their software with great upgrade pricing. Cakewalk had a bundle deal where you could upgrade to X2 and get Izotope's Ozone for $249. Presonus had a 50% off deal. Imageline gives you lifetime free upgrades. For Reason 5 and under owners an upgrade price of $169 gives you basically what use to be Reason and Record. Then there's Reaper that is $69 for a non commercial license and it's probably one of the most stable DAWs out there.

I was fortunate to get the 9 Suite upgrade with their 1st pricing mistake. I do like it so far but I can't afford to upgrade my other Ableton license. I just hope the last official release of 8 is the 64 bit beta.

I'm not personally shocked or surprised at the cost of upgrades.
I do find it a bit of a stab at Suite users, that there is not much of a discount at all, and if you consider that non Suite users are getting upgrades to Suite 8 with a free path to suite 9 for essentially $8 more than they are currently offering 8 Suite users, then it's kinda painful to look at.

Even better, at this point they talk about how they will eventually offer 8 Suite (M4L etc.) users a discount path to Suite 9 and Push. You're going to have two things happen, the price for upgrading from Suite 9 to Push and the price for current Suite 8 owners who do not get a free upgrade to Suite 9 will be announced, and it will most likely make some users upset, because at this point it's a gamble to upgrade or wait and see....

I'm hoping Ableton come to their senses and offer Suite users a substantially better price than currently offered for Push and 9 at $848. Considering pre orders for Push for $599 include Intro which has a MSRP of $139, that puts Push at roughly the same price for Suite 8 owners....
There's a lot of people who have loyalty to a company based on the software etc. I just hope/wish that Ableton would show some loyalty towards it's long time users.

i keep in mind the big disappointment with the missing share function. another few features for a big price? how many will ableton release??

always consumers/users are on the run to get the newest, hippest stuff.
still use osx 10.5 dont want to upgrade . so at the end i will keep things slow down and return to my yamaha sampler and perhaps an mpc...

Here's a kicker. I just received a 20% off email this week for Music 123. I just bought the boxed upgrade for Live 8 to Suite 8 for only $252 something with priority shipping. That's like $100 less that Ableton's 25% off "deal". Before I purchased that, I emailed Ableton support, and they said that, yes, I still qualified for the free Live 9 suite upgrade when it comes.

So search for those coupons!

Seems weird that there is no free upgrade to Live 9 for Suite 8 owners that want to take advantage of the current 25% off upgrade to Suite 8 plus M4L

The upgrade path offered from live 8 suite (200E) is beyond ridiculous for what they and don't offer.
logic pro seems to have a lot on offer for linear programming for a fantastic price.

I just can't justify $300 for Live 9 Suite, or $848 for Live 9 Suite with Push.

I keep seeing these "first day" prices of a lot cheaper than what Ableton is offering those same people now. I never got any emails or anything from Ableton about Live 9. I just happened to decide one day to go to www.ableton.com and saw Live 9 was coming And as usual, they cater to new customers and rape existing ones (which in a way makes sense, I know that. New customers bring more money).

But $300 for what is, aside from a handful of new features, rolling in a bunch of crap that used to be extra? M4L, maybe, but orchestra and other packs are now part of Suite, too?

I don't think so. I'm sure M4L is amazing, but almost half the cost of a new Live 9 Suite license ($699 before 25% discount currently on offer) is a bitter pill to swallow, imo.

I may do it anyway, but not any time soon.

Mine did the same (well, went to $209 actually, but close enough).

It is very interesting that I have two upgrade paths to Live Suite 9. One of them costs $209, and the other costs $399. The cheaper one actually delivers value to me today.

I snoozed, I lost. My upgrade price is now $190 higher because I can no longer upgrade Live 8 Suite. It look a long time to even find the upgrade offer. There's a pointless yellow box with drop down menu in it under "shop," but it doesn't do anything.

My fault for waiting, but $190 is a big enough penalty, I think I'll just stay on Live 8 and sit this one out.

In the USA it's Logic Pro for $199 and Upgrade to Suite 9 from Suite 8 for $299.

You can cross-grade to Digital Performer 8 or Cubase 7 for $399.
Upgrades in DP are always $199.

Such is the user cost of having multiple developers in the Suite pie.

Despite what it does Live is an expensive DAW.
