Controller design idea. Comments?

Post by MrYellow » Fri Apr 08, 2005 8:16 am

I'm forming a concept of the kind of mixer MIDI controller I'd like....
Looking for comments on things I may have missed which would come in handy.

I'll try to lay this out in a way that sort of mirrors the layout without
having to open any graphics programs :-)

Channel Section
----------------------------------------

Pan

Send 1
Send 2
Send 3
Send 4

EQ3 On/Off
Kill | EQ3 Hi -> Outside Ring Freq
Kill | EQ3 Mid
Kill | EQ3 Low -> Outside Ring Freq
(Kill is push-pull switch on the EQ knobs)

Mute
PFL
Arm

A - B

Play - Stop

Fader

----------------------------------------

Send Bus x4
----------------------------------------

4 Buttons (Effects On/Off)
Joystick? With selector switch?
Lots of room, maybe 4 or more knobs for each?
Could even use those concentric pots for more control with less knobs

----------------------------------------

Master Bus
----------------------------------------

4 Buttons (Effects On/Off)
(My setup includes a "midnight" kinda setup with Vinyl Dist, EQ3, Erosion)

Fader

XFade

----------------------------------------

Ideas? Comments?

Oh of course it will have retro knobs and huge metal rails down the side :-P

you definitely need a dedicated effect off button for the eq3, that plugin sounds horrible...

Opps.... Yeah had that in my original plan.

btw.... I found setting both the Freq controls at around 1KHz makes it pretty transparent.

edit: Added the kills and on/off above.

Put the kills on the left side just for the text, it's really right side.
EQ3 On/Off would probably go on bottom (hate reaching past knobs to get to buttons)

2 simple footswitches with polarity reverse would be handy i think....
Currently I use my Evolution keyboards footswitch for recording simple
clips hands-free. I've once set it up with Bome's to be Down->Enter.... So
I think 2 switches would just about cover a lot of simple recording needs.

(I had a bunch of pedals for other stuff, just think 2 would be handy on this)

Looks good, but I would put the pan knob at the bottom, just above the fader. Did you put it at the top of the ch. strip for a reason?

-but then I'm a panning freaking fool... :)

Yeah I wasn't sure about that...... I don't pan too much, but my first
thought was near the fader..... Guess I just moved it because I don't pan
much. Maybe it should be a smaller knob then the others....

edit: Tho if it has a center position notch then a smaller knob would be
hard to get detail with.

Just discovered I can set it up so that the EQ knobs have.....

Gain on the main shaft, Freq on the outer-ring, and a Push-Pull switch for
kills incorporated into the knob. So everything is right there in the one
unit. I'll have to try this, see if it's too touchy and easy to mess up, but
sounds like a real handy "have everything at fingertips" space saver.
