Just saying, all you dudes thinking, ahh, this is gonna be easy, I can just sing the notes right in.

Basic music theory can be taught in a few hours.

Singing, weeks / months.....

It's not really singing though. If the examples are anything to go by, having the talent to sing in the shower (the ability to carry a rudimentary tune) will be enough rather than needing Adele like proficiency.

imho, playing a real instrument is more important than music theory only ;) (more fun too)

btw. you still get the rhythm when you canĀ“t sing

so?

You live with your voice. Not everyone lives with a keyboard or whatever other controller. The feature also works with other instruments like piano, as evinced by 'stealing' the chord from Bill Evans. No one says you have to use it.

I find it easier to improvise by humming a tune over a backing than blurting something out on a keyboard so I'm very curious to see how it will affect creating melodylines and stuff like that. It won't replace my keyboard or any other instrument, but it's an option with a load of potential and choice is always good.

Although I'm interested most in the drums-to-midi stuff, the idea of taking great grooves and using them with my own sounds makes me giddy.

Of course, it's not hard at all. Just badly taught for the most part.

Self learning also makes it harder.

anyone can learn theory, doesnt mean they'll know how to apply it

anyone can learn to sing, but that doesn't mean they will have a good voice, can't teach timbre or the many x-factors that make a Singer

music theory class is not just a couple hours and that class is just the introduction to music theory really.

i think the point of the audio to midi thing was for when you have an idea and you don't know how to write it out in midi and things like that. it just matches pitch, you don't need to be good at singing really.

"learning" in theory is easy ... you just need good memory and some understanding.
implementing the theory is where you spend your time...
we're talking years... not months..

This is one of the strangest posts I have ever seen. You think that people wanting to translate their hummed melodies into midi are going to be held back by the fact that they are not world class singers?

The technology won't discriminate against poor singing tone.

I was thinking, so if their melody jumps say a seventh, it's pretty likely every time they sing it it's going to be different.

Esp if there is other stuff going on.

But I haven't used it so I really dont know.

And I wasn't talking about being a world class singer, just thinking about how people who don't sing may struggle with larger intervals..

i'm thinking that the audio to midi function will benefit people on a few levels.
the people that have a good sense of music but can not play a lick nor do they understand theory
aka a regular DJ
now they can hum in the melody line and go from their.

i bet string player will be very happy.. i know i am..
i can kill it on the Bass and play guitar pretty good too
but on the keys i'm getting better.
my main interface has been the mpd's and now quneo..
over the year i have become very proficient on playing the pads but
if i can just play in my ideas with my primary instrument then swap it to midi and add synths.. ooo awesome!

learning theory to some one that knows theory is simple.
to some one that does not have a clue it is not simple.
basic idea of theory can by told to some one in a short period of time
but they probably wont get it until they study and play an instrument (voice = instrument too)

"Hey do you know you can convert audio to MIDI in Live 9?"

"No, but if you hum it I'll play along."
