Yeah, sound shaping skills are important, and one other thing we can mention is composition. I heard some Aeroplane songs and his style is very retro, despite his analog synths. He's retro in a composition way, in the style.
Maybe today with effects and a bit more work analog gear and the VSTs can easily live together.

The workflow is another important thing, and i found Tetra to be very difficult in the tweaking territory.
With software i agree with condra, it's a lot easier and fun.

DSI filters generally have that saturated vintage feel, it's just the flavour they chose.
I have a Waldorf Pulse and that beast is analogue but sounds super modern.

You can use Macrobat (part of Clyphx) to send sysex data from macro knobs in Live. I used it to make a set of (empty) midi fx racks that I can use to control my Alpha Juno.
