USB interface for an Ableton beginner

Post by RobbinsJ » Thu Dec 27, 2012 12:40 am

Hey guys,

Ableton newbie here looking to get a fairly simple USB interface which will enable me to plug in a guitar/microphone to record vocals and other input.

I've got an ART USB Dual Pre interface at the moment, however I'm experiencing some problems, probably due to the old age of the device (got it second hand about a year ago):

1) An "airy", hissy sort of background noise - tolerable but irritating and prevalent on recordings. Thought it might be the microphone but the noise is present even when there is no input.
2) Loose USB port - constantly disconnecting

So can anybody recommend a "budget" (£125 max if possible) USB interface that is compatible with Ableton? Devices like the Alesis iO2 seem to fit the bill, but I've heard horror stories about it.

Thanks in advance guys. Can provide more info if necessary.

Everything about it is excellent. Except for the casing on the actual device. Don't drop it.

if you want a good interface that sounds awesome I'd suggest the E-MU 0404 usb interface. Awesome preamps and a good beginner interface.

Thanks so much for all your replies.

I opted for the Focusrite Scarlett for £119 from Amazon (which allowed me to put Xmas gift certificates to good use!).

Excited for its arrival, fingers crossed it all goes smoothly!

Cheers again.

Good choice. I really like my Scarlett 8i6. The mic preamps sound very good.
