Hi all,

There are a ton of resources for people looking to produce using Ableton but I find there are significantly fewer that deal specifically with how to use it as a live performance instrument.

Does anybody have any recommendations of especially good sources of tips/tricks/etc.? It could be threads on here, YouTube videos.... anything, really.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
Matthew

Using Live for live performance is a more personal thing than production. Tarekith's blog is totally different to how I use Live for gigs and even then, how I use Live changes depending on the project.

The cool thing about Live is that there is no right way to do something. It'll do whatever you want. For instance, I load my Launchpad [User 1] with samples, like an MPC or a Maschine. Only I get 8 pages of 64 samples each. I play alongside a bassist and a guitarist. Who also, by the way, route their signals into Live, where they can be glossed or destroyed, depending on the mood of the venue. And of course this is all in one instance of Live.

So interesting stuff so far, though I suppose I should have been more clear: I'm most interested in learning features that are the most applicable to playing live but which you wouldn't generally use in production.

An example would be tricks using Follow Actions. You can use them in production, of course, but they're mainly a real-time tool.

I have a tutorial on this here

Moving a song from Arrange to Session View

This was done to show a quick way to bring a full song back from Arrange to Session, and work on it in Session and Arrange at the same time. But it also features a video from Tom Cosm explaining how he plays live. Also it shows how to launch scene after scene automatically. You could mix my method and Tom's. You could use a Launchpad and a controller such as a Nocturn. I have reviews/tutorials on both of those.

Novation Launchpad - review and tutorial

Novation Launchpad - tutorial 2.

Novation Nocturn

Also I have a review of some software for producers playing their tracks on an APC40 here

Akai APC 40 scripts from Gangsterish

Review/tutorial on two templates and scripts from Gangsterish, a 'producer' one designed for live performance, and a DJ one, for the Akai APC40.

The review focusses on the DJ script/template but there is also a 'producer' one which is similar, and is designed for playing your own songs live.

Here is the standard APC40 review

Akai APC40 Ableton controller Review and tutorial.
