Deep House Rhode?

Post by GDOGG » Fri Jan 04, 2013 3:46 am

I've never found out what this particular sound is called or a particulary effective way of synthesizing anything like it. It's so prevalent in so much house music. I'm guessing it's rhode but not like any rhode i've found yet. whatever it is moody is a beast at using it. Any advice? And am i setting myself up for a fall ie. I am aware there is this thing called sampling ;) but atm I'm not really setup for ripping from vinyl. As I'm not really sure what kindof sound it is I haven't been able to find it in any sample packs on lpmasters etc

This particular Moodymann track could be samples (I think a lot of his stuff is).
There ain't any Rhodes piano in there just a (sampled) string/synth part.
Or it could be a synth/string sound combined/layered from an analog synth or similar.
This is a Rhodes piano......

He uses a Rhodes here at about 3.06.....

If you were wanting that string sound at the beginning of your original posting then you'd be hunting forever if you were trying to get it with a Rhodes piano ;)

As mentioned above, the sound (I think) you are looking for is not a rhode organ at all, but actually synthesis. I think the most important part of getting that sound is chord placement, and filter freq modulation with a high resonance. I think you could get a very similar sound from almost any synth.

Here is my finished attempt at recreating the sound: ... le/s-5AHqc

You can download the Live Set here: ... xample.als

I used Operator and came up with something quite similar using the following settings:

Osc A: Sq4
Osc B: Sin, level at -23
Osc C: White Noise at level -15
Filter: Band Ladder with resonance at about 1.6 -- wiggle the freq around, and automate it to get those steep step cutoffs you hear every now and then (where it sounds like a sample restarts)

LFO: Rate 53 hz, amount around 50%, modulating the filter frequency. If you leave it like this, it will be a very balanced modulation. If you want it to be a little more interesting, consider using Destination B to mod LFO Rate -- I'm using about 30%. This helps add a little movement into otherwise perfect sine wave.

I think the song is in Bb Maj, and the chord I'm using in my example is and inverted Bb chord (D, F, Bb, with more friends on top)

The filter/lfo in the original example bounces around a little more than my own, but the concept is pretty much there. It might be easier to resample the synth as previously suggested to get the quick frequency cutoff changes.

Hopefully this was the part you were asking about :)

You can say that again - I've just had a listen and it's I Want Your Love by Chic (well a tiny section of it repeated over and over).

How do these people get away with releasing it as their "own work"?!
