Slow rendering - and very little CPU usage

Post by kristianberg » Wed Jan 09, 2013 4:35 pm

I run Live 8.3.4 on my new Macbook Pro 2.6GHz quad-core i7 with 8GB ram, OSX 10.8.2

When rendering on my old Dual-core, Live would use 100% of the CPU power. But with the new quad-core, Live only use about 10% CPU power, and rendering takes about the same time as on the old dual-core.
In preferences, multicore support is turned ON.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Why can't Live use more CPU power when rendering?

If you use outboards effects or synths live will render in real time, so it will always be the same speed.
Else, it's a bug ^_^

Thanks for the reply.

No external hardware used. The render time follows the amount of tracks and plugins.

Just tried with the Live 8.4 Beta 9, and unfortunately it renders with the same speed.

Any more ideas what to do?

Depending on the project it might be limited by the hdd. My rendering seemed to get a lot faster with an ssd.

What does your disk usage indicator say when it's rendering?

Welcome to the world of single core rendering.

There's a thread on the Live 9 beta forums about this as well, it's still the case with Live 9.

Thanks for replays!

Just rendered a project with only Live's built-in plugins, but lots of them. CPU usage 10%, Disk usage peak 2,8MB/S...

Will check out the Live 9 thread.

Some 3rd party plugs do oversampling on render too, slowing things down, but making them sound better in the end... usually ;)

Got answer from Ableton support: "Live uses only one core for rendering, even on multi-core machines".

Hope that changes in the no to far future..
