Moog Sub Phatty - lower cost Moog with big features
Has MIDI in & out. You can attach a larger keyboard.
Also has external audio input for signal processing.
Really want to take this on a test flight!

Well, that can translate into:beats me wrote:Since when is $1,100 low cost???
Moog is the Apple of electronica.
1. Quality
2. Good design & ergonomics
3. Retaining it's resale value
4. Magic... (all right, Apple is full of B.S. on that front, but Moogs do have a bit of mojo in the circuits)

I don’t have any Moog hardware and I’m sure they sound great for what they are, but I refuse to believe you can’t get the same sound dropping the same total $$ on a handful of softsynths which would also give you a lot more flexibility and sound range.

Of course you can't. That's why Moog is still in business.I refuse to believe you can’t get the same sound dropping the same total $$ on a handful of softsynths

I'd say it has more to do with preference, reputation, and ease of use. Not because it's impossible to get the same sounds any other way.

Yes but it's probably less fun. This thing obviously is about hands on control (please note how elegantly i avoided stepping into the analog vs digital trap). If only the form factor wouldn't be so stupid. Gonna wait for the release of a rack or desktop version.beats me wrote:I don’t have any Moog hardware and I’m sure they sound great for what they are, but I refuse to believe you can’t get the same sound dropping the same total $$ on a handful of softsynths which would also give you a lot more flexibility and sound range.

That said, this new Moog looks pretty interesting for sure.

I'm gonna say there are aspects of Moog sound, as well as performance variables that are impossible to create with software.
Harnessing electrical current has a unique quality 1's and 0's do not compute.
Sure you can make some basic sound with a Moog or any other analogue synth, play that note and emulate that result fairly well with a softsynth.
But you will never duplicate the electrical sonics in PWM, filter modulation, detuning modulation, velocity variation, overdriven filters, turning the wave form from triangle to pulse.
My phone plays vinyl rips of MP3's but it's different than the actual vinyl playing.
I'm not saying one is better than the other, but if you make music, you'd be a fool not to notice the difference.
It's like saying new guitar strings sound just like old ones, come on.
I wish this Sub Phatty was less than 1G, but as stated above, Moogs have a better resale value/life, better than apple thats fer sure.
I really like that Moog is remaining true to what has made Moog's great with this new model.
Monophonic fatness, uber simple control panel.
Preset "option"

Re: Moog Sub Phatty - low cost, big features
Why wouldn't somebody just drop the extra $200 - $300 to get a Little Phatty instead?

Re: Moog Sub Phatty - low cost, big features
what I like about the sub vs little phatty, is the knobs are not layered.
Everything you need is right on the surface.
I have a slim phatty and absolutely love it, and it might seem trivial, but I would like to have access to resonance and cutoff simultaneously. Granted I can use an external controller, but I'd rather it be available.
That said, I actually like the LED encoders on the little/slim phatty's.
I like that they update per preset.
It's a modern convenience I prefer.
I also like to see the values bouncing around when a sequencer is driving it, visual feedback is nice.

the sub has dedicated knobs for each function.beats me wrote:Why wouldn't somebody just drop the extra $200 - $300 to get a Little Phatty instead?
little phatty has shared knobs for multiple functions.
[edit] yea what juan said
