Finding Hip Hop Drum Samples

Post by penguinpajamas » Tue Feb 05, 2013 2:16 am

Hey guys, I've been trying to use Ableton for more hip hop drum samples for beats and whatnot. I've been trying to find some one-hit hip hop samples for this very purpose but I'm having trouble knowing where to look. Ideally, I want to be able to have enough samples to create hip hop drum beats rather well and efficiently that can be pretty diverse without having to spend forever searching for samples each time. I've tried searching for samples myself to little avail.

If anyone could point me in the right direction for samples (ideally but not necessarily free) that would be amazing.

Thanks,
Charlie

Easy stuff...

There are many options and google will help you better. You could go back to a heap of old school hip-hop, new hop-hop etc and just sample some of the beats they have anc chop, eq and make new samples from them (as most hip-hop beates are sampled anyway). You can scour the net and forums for free samples to use (that may or may not be ripped from CDs or samplers anyway). You could try a google search like THIS and just pay a few $$$ for some sample disks or loop packs and get the samples that way. Or you can wait for somoene to pop up here and offer a swag of free samples.

Plenty of ways to get going.

Oh, one I forgot nwhich is fun. Hit youtube and find beat boxers and other solo artists and sample bits of these and mash them up a little. With hip-hop, everything is fair game.

Another thing to remember is you can make mediocre samples sound great and unique by layering and adding effects. I never just use samples straight.

GOLDBABY http://www.goldbaby.co.nz/ awesome 1 hit sample packs. you can find a pack by them, for pretty much any legendary vintage drum machine. and they are pretty cheap, in my opinion.

Thanks guys! Do you know of any good sample packs in particular that you can recommend that cost a reasonable amount?

i have the "tape 808" sample pack from those GOLDBABY guys. 30 bucks for about 400 1 hits. the 808 is a hip hop standard. that would be a good place to start. its an awesome pack! it's my "go to"....im not a hip hop guy, but as the BEASTIE BOYS once said, "everybody gettin' down make no mistake, nothing sounds quite like an 8 0 8!" 8) i also have "tape drum machines vol.2" which is also really good, for the same price, that guy has about 1800 samples, so you will be digging around a lot to find something you like.
