Starting With FM Synthesis

Post by penguinpajamas » Fri Feb 22, 2013 12:04 am

I've been realizing some of the capabilities of FM synthesis lately and, while I can manage to understand the concept behind it and how it works, I really feel as though I'm just experimenting randomly and getting lucky with many sounds. I'm looking into learning a thing or two about FM synthesis and how I can fine tune my skill i order to use it to my advantage. If you guys knew of any good sources for learning FM synthesis for practical use, I'd love to be pointed in the right direction!

I'm currently using Operator for FM.

Thanks,
Charlie

nickstutorials.com is what I learned a lot from, but honestly reverse engineering patches that you like are the best way. Go through the presets that come with Live and find sounds that you like. Then you can see what the operator settings are and take those concepts into your own sound design. This really goes for any softsynth tbh.
