Song sounds perfect in ableton but exported it sounds bad ):

Post by Rhett383 » Sat Feb 23, 2013 1:02 am

Hey guys,

Right now I'm creating a song using ASIO4ALL and it sounds great in ableton, but as soon as I render it to disk it doesn't sound correct at all. I mean it's still the same song, but it sounds so much more "airy" and low quality and just all in all crappy. Why does it sound amazing in ableton but horrible in .wav or .mp3 :(

help?

P.S. I know mastering, but this happens even after I master.

Dump ASIO4ALL.

It's NOT an ASIO driver!

Okay, but that still leaves me the problem that it sounds like shit rendered and direct audio is even worse.

So I'm guessing that since no one is posting that means that you all either have macs or none of you have ever exported a song or clip before. -_-

Maybe you should mention what settings you're using to export.

EDIT: OP has now added that info to his post.

because your audio player doesn't use asio4all? it's frequently asked question I think.

Where are you playing the rendered version from anyway? Do you drop it into Live to play it? That'd probably be the closest to hearing whether the result sounds different from the original.

If you're listening in Live, and then playing it on something else, it is hard to know if there is anything influencing the sound.

After you do that, you can decide if it is rendering (sounds different even when played in Live), or a mastering issue (doesn't seem consistent or expected in different players, but sounds the same in Ableton)

What are your frequency rates set to in Ableton?

Try and export to the highest possible sample rate and bitrate. I see you are exportiong to 24bit already, try and export to 96khz as a test. This will ensure that any samples or instruments you have in your project are not being truncated on export.

Additionally, check your playback software. If you are playing the mixdown in something like Windows Media Player you may have an effect active which will colour the sound.

Change the bit depth to 16bit. I had this same problem a while back.

turn on normalizing, it helps cover mistakes made by people that think they know mastering. :P

I've been using ASIO4ALL as my sound card driver since Live 3.

Try exporting in 44.1khz rather than 48k and see if there's a difference.

Also, try making sure you're using the same driver and playback source in Windows as you are in Ableton.

I listen via my interface in Live and use onboard sound for the rest of Windows, and the levels are different so it ends up sounding slightly different.
