I'm using a Novation Nio 2/4 (could do with an upgrade anyway), I don't think i'm using any other digital sources?

If you run it from your internal computer sound card what happens ? It would eliminate the Novation if it continues.

I had the same occurrence yesterday on Live 9, i couldn't get to the cause so just I just rebooted - all fine so far.

another possible cause - I had something similar last year when I downloaded a torrent that contained the "stdrt.exe" virus  (nasty little bugger, hides in your temp folder!) - I would get random music playing in the background; have a look in your temp folder to eliminate this possibility.
