Is there a way to delete Suite 8 Library?

Post by The Northern Contingent » Thu Mar 07, 2013 10:09 am

Hi everyone,

After the gargantuan task of installing the lovely new Suite 9 library, I'd like to reclaim some badly needed disk space by deleting the Suite 8 library content. Is there a way of doing this without affecting the Suite 9 library? I'm on a Mac, Mountain Lion 10.8.2.

Thanks.

Nope, sorry.. Its stuck on your system...

Even if you get a new mac, it will re-install OTA...

The only way i know of deleting it is if you stick your mac into the freezer overnight... (Does not work with Snow leopard)

Good luck:)

Try spreading peanut butter in your internet vent.

Well, I've tried the peanut butter and freezing techniques, but Suite 8 is still there. Any other ideas?

back it up! also be aware that your old livesets might use samples from the live8 library, so they will have broken sample references when you open them after deleting the live8 library. that can be painful!

Thanks for the tip - I will definitely do this. Where abouts on the Mac would the Suite 8 library be? Is it kept separate from the Suite library for 9, or are they mixed together?

As others said; it heavily depends on your work. A lot of your projects could be referencing stuff directly (like samples or such) and then removing the library can cause issues.

But there are safer ways to regain some "immediate" space, especially if you still have Live 8 lying around.

For example; I already noticed that although my Kim partner instrument still resides in the Live 8 library (and can be dragged in from that location too) Live 9 still expects me to re-install it, after which it gets installed in the new "Factory packs" folder and becomes available under the "Packs" category. But this effectively means that you now have the same livepack installed on 2 places at the same time. A waste of diskspace for sure! That is: if you're not going to use Live 8 anymore.

So what you could also do is fire up Live 8 (if you still have that) and then use the livepack "manager" (Preferences -> Library tab) to uninstall the livepacks which you just re-installed. That will remove these contents from your Live 8 library.

The good part should be obvious: because you already know that the livepack in question has been installed in Live 9 you can also be sure that its safe to remove it from Live 8. So effectively only removing contents from the library of which you're sure it can go.

Another "power tip": Try renaming the library folder before you remove it. That will give you a very good indication as to what might happen to your setup the moment you completely remove it.
With kind regards,

Peter

Thanks everyone - that's really helpful. Deleting the Suite 8 library shouldn't make any difference as

a) I've collected all and saved my finished tracks and
b) I've been ruthless with my unfinished Suite 8 tracks and culled the lot of them as on reflection I realised they were all shite.

In contrast, Live 9 ensures every song I write will be a top notch chart killer. Watch out Simon Cowell - I'm coming for the Xmas number 1.
