When recording in arrangement view why does the piano roll disappear.
Is there a way to have it record in realtime like in session view?

It's a good question

What do you mean disappears? I am assuming you have a MIDI track armed and have the window expanded out so you can see in it for note placement, and this disappears?! I rarely record in arrangement view, maybe have to check this out when I am next in Live.

It vanishes when you hit the record button, and says 'no clip selected'.

I don't know the official reason but my theory is that this is because you're not so much recording a single clip but an entire track, which by itself can consist of multiple clips.

The piano roll as you call it is basically the clip editor, the notes view. But as soon as you're dealing with multiple clips (think for example about overdub scenario's) then it becomes a bit tedious it seems to keep track of it all.

Of course it wouldn't be that illogic to have this feature, some other DAW's do support this feature (by recording in 'edit mode'). But it seems that in Live session view deals with clips (thus provides the clip editor) and arrangement deals with whole tracks.

The only option I can come up with is using the session view itself, then perhaps drag clips back and forth.
