I7 dual core vs quad core
I7 dual core vs quad core
Hi
I'm choosing a new laptop and I have a doubt between
Prozessor: Intel Core i7 3632QM (2.2GHz), Quad Core, 6MB Cache, Turbo Boost bis zu 3.2GHz
And
Prozessor: Intel Core i7 3520M (2.9GHz), 4MB Cache, Turbo Boost bis 3.6GHz
Which one will work better with Ableton Live?
Thanks

id get the quad
Re: I7 dual core vs quad core
thanks!
could you also tell me why?
will a quad core work better for all tasks/workflows ?

Re: I7 dual core vs quad core
More cores, more threads, can spread the work across more things and be more efficient. The other plus to the quad core is the extra 2mb cache, having a bigger cache can really make up for processor deficiencies in alot of cases, its also why processors like the celeron series sucked hard for anything processor intensive despite having possibly very high clock rates

Re: I7 dual core vs quad core
Quad core will be better. That said, the dual i7 is probably adequate. I'm running a dual core 2.7 ghz i7 in my macbook pro and I haven't maxed anything out to the point of it crashing yet.
MacBook Pro (13", 2.7ghz i7, 16gb, 10.9), Suite 9
Re: I7 dual core vs quad core
The 3632QM is a LOT faster. A benchmark score of 7095 vs 4507 according to cpubenchmark.net. I run a 3517U which scores 3814 but handles most things just fine - I'm one of those annoying singer-songwriter types and I do live guitar and vocal tracking with about 8ms latency (64 samples) and several effects running on each track. About the only time I overload is when I use some of the more complex instruments with a lot of effects on top of that.

Re: I7 dual core vs quad core
3632QM will be 50% faster than 3520M.

Re: I7 dual core vs quad core
thanks for the inputs and the interesting read
so far i have found this one as best candidate
HP EliteBook 8470w, i7 3630QM, 14" HD+, FirePro M2000
Prozessor: Intel Core i7 3630QM (2.4GHz), Quad Core, 6MB Cache, Turbo Frequency 3.4GHz
Chipsatz: Mobile Intel QM77 Express
Display: 14.0" LED Backlight, Anti-Glare
Auflösung: HD+ (1600 x 900)
Arbeitsspeicher: 8GB DDR3 (2x 4096MB), 1600MHz, maximal 2x 8GB
Harddisk: 750GB, 7200rpm + 24GB mSATA SSD Cache
Grafik-Adapter: AMD FirePro M2000 mit 1GB (dediziert)
Optical Drive: blu-ray ROM (nur Lesen), DVD±RW SuperMulti Brenner
Netzwerk: WLAN 802.11b/g/n, Gigabit LAN, Bluetooth 4.0
Sound: HD Audio, Integrierte Stereolautsprecher
Anschlüsse: 2x USB 3.0, 2x USB (1x powered, 1x geteilt mit eSATA), DisplayPort, VGA, Firewire, Audio, RJ-45, RJ-11, ExpressCard /54, Docking Port, Upgrade Bay, Anschluss für sekundären Akku
which has also an expresscard slot to use with my rme
the only negative point is that it is by HP
and i've made horrible experiences in the past
but i really could not find anything equivalent in this price range
any suggestion or comment before i order?

Re: I7 dual core vs quad core
Live tries to run each track on it's own core. U-he Synths DIVA and ACE run each oscillator on their own core in multicore mode.
If you can wait the Intel i7 Haswells come out around june. These will push prices down and offer 10% more CPU power. In 2014 Intel i7 Broadwell comes out which has all the motherboard chips including a DX11 GPU all on the CPU die.

Re: I7 dual core vs quad core
i fear i can't wait so long
my actual machine is giving horrible cpu spikes
considering that i was unable to find anything better
i will have to go with the hp
but i hate to buy something i'm not really convinced from the beginning

Re: I7 dual core vs quad core
Increasing the latency will reduce the CPU spikes and use sends return tracks for effects so that tracks are sharing one reverb, delay and so on instead of one each.

thank youXSIMan wrote:Increasing the latency will reduce the CPU spikes and use sends return tracks for effects so that tracks are sharing one reverb, delay and so on instead of one each.
i'm already doing this (also freeze tracks), but it is really not handy with my workflow
i need to be able to do more, without investing time in workarounds
and i guess at this poing, the only way to achieve this, is a new machine

Re: I7 dual core vs quad core
I'm curious how the 50% faster figure was arrived at. Has anyone here done real benchmarks of the quad vs dual with Ableton or is this guestimation?
thanks!
thanks!
