I'm contemplating getting a Moogerfooger MF-101. I'd also need a new sound card as my current one is actually just a DAC. I have no experience using hardware so I need some help with conceptual understanding. Let's say I buy a Babyface. Would it go like this:

Live --> Babyface --> MF-101 --> Babyface --> Live --> Babyface --> monitors?

How many of the ins/outs am I using to hook up this one piece of gear?

You can use an external instrument device. In the device you'll send audio to an output on the babyface which you'll connect to the input on the fooger. You'll then select an input on the babyface which you'll connect to the output of the fooger. If you want more control get yourself something like silent way http://www.expert-sleepers.co.uk/silentway.html to control all of the knobs through CV.

Let's say you have a mono track in live that you want processed through the MF-101, not the entire master out from Live. You can simply set an external instrument device on the track or route sends/returns manually. Following is the breakdown of hardware connections required:

Output 1 - Live mono track to input of MF-101 through interface
Input 1 - MF-101 output to Live through interface
Output 2 - Live mono master out to monitor through interface

(Optional)
Output 3 - Second line for stereo master out to monitors through interface
Output 4 & 5 - Live stereo cue out to headphones through interface

Thanks for your help. Does it matter that the LP filtering would be in mono? Is Live's LPF stereo? Excuse my ignorance. I.e., would need to buy and hook up two Moog LPFs to simulate Live's LPF?

It sounds as though a Babyface/Duet might not be the best option for me because if I add, say, a phaser or analog delay later on I'll be short of outs... does this sound correct?

If you wanted stereo processing you would need two of them, abletons autofilter is in stereo/mono. You can make stereo tracks mono with the utility device and the spread parameter. Do this to send out mono audio to the Moog filter. Once you've brought it back in you can make it stereo again through effects.
