Clip automation/VST plugin question

I have a lighting control VST plugin (DMXIS) which I use in conjunction with Live. DMXIS works best on either a return or a master channel as it requires sound input to allow some sound based chase features to work.
Am I able to control the plugin from midi track clips using automation even if the plugin is not on that midi track? If so how would I set this up?
I previously used to assign midi controller codes to the plugin's controls but as midi works on 128 steps and DMX (lighting control) has 256 steps I sometimes lose the ability to make fine adjustments to the lighting channels.
Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Did you ever find an answer to your question, or a work-around? I picked up a DMXis this week and it's great but you bring up some interesting things to work on.
