Recording vocals with 9 through mic serious latency issues

Post by CancerRidden » Sat Mar 23, 2013 3:34 am

Hi, I'm trying to record some rough sketches of vocals using the built in laptop mic on ableton 9.

and there are some serious issues regarding latency.

#1) when I monitor the vocals through the monitors, there is a gap between the time i sing to the time i hear myself back on the headphones

#2) i turn monitor off, and use the half headphone method. When the audio is recorded onto the track, there is STILL a gap between when I sing and the proper time during the song. It is even getting recorded onto the track with latency. - the vocals are off beat.

  • How is this be fixed?

Is the reason there is latency because it is through the laptop mic? I have an Mbox Pro 2 and latency with recording was never an issue on Pro Tools.

Would there be latency issues if I used my MboxPro2 instead of the built in laptop mic?

Here is the screenshot of my settings

Yeah, probably. You basically have one soundcard as your input device and another as your output. The chances of major latency issues would be significantly less if you were running a mic through your audio interface and using that as your input device as well.

Do you have an ASIO enabled?

^ Cool! I'm not obviously.

but anyway...
You basically have one soundcard as your input device and another as your output.
so you should try changing that and see if it solves your problem.

Okay, so I have my MBox Pro 2 hooked to the MacBookPro, and I'm doing my ins through the hardware audio interface and the latency is still horrendous......

WTF

this level of latency is absolutely unusable.....

Does anyone have any more ideas?

Lower buffer size > so the overall latency approaches zero...
Most soundcards have also a little "inside mixer software" that can let you hear what you sing or play "pre-software"...and last put you're input track to -inf dB so you won't hear the direct and the latency that will produce a little "tube/delay:chorus effect" that can be annoying. (this can also probably be done by the mixer software)
But if you plan to use live plugins "in live" you must lower your buffer until it is a playable latency...

You're singin trough you're laptop mic ???? Is it clamped on a stand with a wind screen ?
