I run my hybrid percussion kit through Live to make crazy dub effects. Here are some youtube videos of how it sounds.

In this video I tried to explain what effects Im using in the annotations.

Very cool! Watching that makes me seriously miss my drum kit.
Re: Any drummer who uses Live ?
Very amazing ! So how do you "link" your acoustic set to Ableton Live ? Do you ... trigger ? Can we do that holding a mic on the instrument and send it to a soundcard ?Jamoflage wrote:I run my hybrid percussion kit through Live to make crazy dub effects. Re: Any drummer who uses Live ?
All the drums are close mic'd so all the sounds are just modified versions of the acoustic drum sounds. A trigger would translate each drum hit into midi information and use that to trigger a midi sound, I have tried this too, but not lately, hmmmm may have to get back into that again.
You can definitely do it holding a mic on the instrument. I put effects on individual drum tracks, and on the drum bus, where all the drum tracks are sent to, and I also use send effects.

Yep - I use Ableton Live.
I trigger midi but mainly record directly into Live. Yamaha DXT 550 with Zildjian Gen 16.
Basic recording here: https://soundcloud.com/cfm-1/the-lost-art-of-keeping-a
Recorded directly out of the mono out of my Alesis amp into Live (may have been live 8 at the time) + glue compressor.

I find Gen 16 cymbals very weird ...CFM wrote:Yep - I use Ableton Live.

You may record stereo !
So here's my setup :
So my soundcard is a Focusrite 2i2, linked to a Macbook Pro 13" with Ableton Live.
Drums are mic'd in the console, and the console to the soundcard.
Then I can control sounds and samples with an Akai MPK49 and MPC1000 as midi controller.
Got very nice headphones to hear Live outs (routed into my console again).
Share your setups !

Yes, I know I'm just too lazy to connect two cables
As for the Gen 16... they are a good compromise between pads and totally analogue cymbals for electronic drummers.
One has to say from pads it took a while to get use to the sound and feel...
Then once decided to add a pad to my drum setup with the gen's
It lasted a week as once hit it I was blown away have crap electronic sound samples of cymbals on my DXT. It was removed never to be seen again.
So one will never go back to electronic cymbal pads - horrible things
I used a Focusrite Pro 24 DSP

Re: Any drummer who uses Live ?
it's the sound of the gen16 that i can't stand, sounds really hi pitched and not natural to me, i must be crazy but i prefer a plastic pad with a good sample from bfd on it, i can adapt to the feel of e-cymbals quite well, the hi hat is maybe trickier but...
I also discovered that if the sound have to be close i just like to have it different, meaning sounding like an electronic synth cymbal and not a real cymbal.
years ago i used to tour with a sonor 10 "jungle snare, a 10" hat and a 16" crash cymbal + kick and 2 tom pads. i had a piezo on the snare and hat and a mic under the crash going to live to be processed. the pads where connected to a roland brain that spit out midi to control impulse. Done probably 300 gigs on this set including some major festivals, solid and fitting in a peli case that was around 20 kg so i could fly it anyware.

Yup I don't think Gen16 cymbals must be used like real cymbals, it's just another instrument. I think that on e-drums too, can't replace an acoustic kit and that's why if I had to, i'd be using it in a totally different way than real drums.
@freshdrumma great setup ! Must try this.

Re: Any drummer who uses Live ?
i used broken headphones as piezo on the snare, great ovriden hypercompressed sound, cheap!
Re: Any drummer who uses Live ?
The good thing about the gen 16 is that you can alter the sound, if not totally like an electronic sample. I have mine on a bright setting but there are darker sounding tones.
Gen 16 again is a compromise, if you have an analogue kit they will not replace 'real' cymbals as they are an in between. Yet, I think they feel better to play than rubber pads.

Re: Any drummer who uses Live ?
What parameter can you alter? i agree they feel better under the sticks, i had a quick try at guitar cente a couple of weeks ago, felt ok.
Re: Any drummer who uses Live ?
You just have presets and then 2 knobs, Pan and volume, and a knob for master reverb and a little EQ I think.freshdrumma wrote:What parameter can you alter? i agree they feel better under the sticks, i had a quick try at guitar cente a couple of weeks ago, felt ok.
