What happens if my USB device gets disconnected live?

Post by infinitesinewave » Fri May 31, 2013 2:00 am

I'm working with 4 Quneos and the APC40 putting together my new live set without CDJs & vinyl.

I've noticed that when I load up Ableton, the program will not recognize the devices if I load up Ableton before I turn on the Quneos and the APC40.

Yesterday, I accidentally disconnected my usb chord while practicing live. I plugged it back in but Ableton no longer recognized the devices. These devices are crucial to my live set because I no longer need to even look at my monitor with those controllers.

The only way I got the devices up and running again was by closing and opening Ableton.

This would be a disaster playing live.

I just purchased Ableton 9... and I was wondering if Ableton 9 fixes this problem. Maybe Ableton 8 has a fix as well that I don't know about. Anyone?

It is fixed in Live 9. There were many posts of gratitude :D.

It is a good thing too. For some reason stuck notes on my Push are fixed by powering off, then on. :/

But yeah, I've tested it on plenty of midi devices!

Yeah, these stuck notes on the Push are pretty freaking annoying and embarrassing.

Yes. I don't know if there is a thread relating to it, but it mostly seems to happen when I use the drum rack mode, and then switch to scale mode. Like there is some weird software related hang or overcompensation. It bites. It can ruin your playing. It'd be one thing if it was physical, but the fact that powering off and then on fixes it is odd.

I wonder if it gets stuck notes in User mode??

I started a thread on it. Please stop by and express your grievances.

they'll fix it soon. Haven't gotten the Push yet. I'm using 4 Quneos instead. They just created a script that allows the same type of key choosing on the fly that the Push offers.

Pre-9, as long as the controller was plugged in and working when starting the program, after the disconnect you can un-enable then re-enable the device (in the Track/Sync/Remote area) and get it back going again.

In my experience all of my controllers except for the Maschine Mikro could be disconnected and reconnected at any point and Live would be able to get them back up and running.. the only side effect is that the "red box" for my APC40 would reset to the top of the session, which can be really annoying and lead to me launching/stopping the wrong clips.

This is all with OS X, in Windows I remember a whole lot of restarting Live and even restarting my entire system to get controllers to show back up. So it may be up to your OS whether or not it is possible to hot swap like this.
