Video: How to Create that "BIg" "Huge" Sound

Post by milfhuntr » Sat Jun 08, 2013 8:20 pm

I show (one of many ways) how to get that "big" "huge" sound.

It's only a start in the mastering process but it helps.

Is this a joke?

Like, honestly, is this "employ a retard day" at the local mastering studio?

If you have to ask, you shouldn't be mastering ANYTHING!

Nope but it's certainly "employ the elitist poser" day at the ableton forum.

Okay,
So there have been some short remarks made about the OT but I thought I would try the technique out.

I'm no mixing engineer or professional producer but I guess boosting the stereo width may create problems (?) but I have to say to my untrained ears things do sound better (I know that is subjective and also loudness can translate into better to people not in the know!)

So, without getting into unpleasantness and name calling can anyone offer well explained and sensible responses to the pros and cons of this technique.

Does it remove the space that exists to place sound in the stereo field?

Thanks,
Adam

hm.
the 2 grouped utility devices are doing the same job as a single utility device set to around 150% width.
the rest of the rack is a multidynamics preset and a limiter on the end.
using the word 'mastering' in this context is just inviting ridicule from "pro's"

i wouldnt say the two split utilities are doing the same as a single utility set at 150. yes this two utility rack setup does make the mixer sound wider, and i quite like it, but it means that it throws everything centre or wide, it carves a gap in the middle of the left/right stereo spectrum so although it does make it sound wide you will lose elements placed say front left/front right, everything with this rack chain becomes either front or side no inbetween, i think its best use would be on a channel strip rather than the master. IMO.

I watched the vid and it seems like a useful tool, but I cant make out exactly whats going on there. Could you possibly post a tutorial on how you set it up and what settings you used? Your video says things like 'watch the Mr Bill video to find out more' but doesnt say what the Mr Bill video is called or provide a link to it, and he has loads of videos!

Thanks
