Apogue duet 2 or RME babyface

Post by db120 » Sat Jun 29, 2013 7:44 pm

I'm trying to decide between these two... leaning towards the babyface since I use Mac and PC. I've seen a couple blurbs where Apogee was playing up the Ipad capabilities of this sound card, does anyone know what advantages the Apogee has over the babyface specific to Ipad music making? Please discuss

With latest firmware Babyface can also work with Ipad.

For me is quite clear, given the features and support RME all the way.

...no doubt...the babyface.

they almost cost the same.....the appogee is a very very fancy, good sounding interface.... the babyface is a real recording tool with very very accurate converters and damned smooth drivers for ALL platforms....the control panel software is a serious solution for all kind of recording, live and playback situations....

For me, Babyface has the advantage:

ADAT expansion.

RME's TotalMix software is extremely powerful & flexible.

RME's support is very responsive.

Class Compliant for Apple portable devices.

Here's a battery powered configuration:

I've owned both. The Babyface is much more flexible given that it'll work on Mac, PC and iPad, etc. Its internal mixing capabilities are hugely more sophisticated and it has some built in effects (reverb, EQ, delay). It has a midi port. The Apogee has soft limiting capabilities and you can set both inputs to instrument input whereas the Babyface only has one instrument level input. The Apogee is a bit easier to use as it has fewer features. There are a few other differences but that's most of it I think. Sound quality wise both sound fantastic. Drivers are pretty solid on both but I think RME has the edge. I'd go for the RME, that's the own I kept, but both are very nice devices.

I started having continuous problems with the Duet V1 after updating to Lion and having to update the Apogee software. (I would get audio dropouts whenever changing Sample Rates and would have to reselect the interface in Live's Audio preferences every time... also the same thing sometimes when mixing AU's and VSTs, I did contact Apogee but could never find a solution...Also read that other folks have had issues with that Lion release Apogee software with other products... there's a couple of threads here and a couple on Gearslutz),

In the end I sucked it up and bought a BabyFace. Problem solved.

Another vote for the RME. ;)

The battery powered solution is somewhat experimental. Make sure you follow the link for updates:
